Visiting flower fields around Leiden is a delightful experience, especially during the springtime when the famous Dutch tulips are in full bloom. The best time to visit is between mid-March until mid-May.
Stretching from Leiden to Haarlem, the Bollenstreek (Bulb Region) is filled with vast flower fields, where tulips, daffodils, and hyacinths can be found. It is a paradise for flower enthusiasts and nature lovers alike.

1. Keukenhof
Located in Lisse, Keukenhof is only a 30-minute car ride from Leiden, and easy to reach by car, bike, or public transport. It is one of the world’s largest flower gardens and people come from all over the globe to visit. It features an abundance of diverse tulips, daffodils, hyacinths, and other spring bulbs, spread across 32 hectares of beautifully landscaped gardens. At the Leiden Tourist Office, you can buy combi tickets (entrance + public transport.)
Other amenities offered by the park that you can purchase include a whisper boat, bicycle rental, guided tour, and activities for children, along with many options for food and beverage.

2. De Zilk
De Zilk is a small village near Lisse known for its picturesque flower fields. It’s a great opportunity to go for a cycling trip and stroll through the fields in the countryside. Ideal for those looking for a quieter experience with the flower fields to enjoy the springtime beauty.
In addition to the fields, there are many historic buildings that you can look for. If you find yourself hungry, you’ll find delicious eateries perfect to stop halfway for coffee and cake.
3. Hillegom
Just a short 24 minutes by car from Leiden, Hillegom is surrounded by flower fields that explode with color during the spring season. Visit the local flower farms to learn about bulb cultivation and purchase bulbs to take home as souvenirs and bring your home to life.
A fan favourite is the Tulip Barn, offering more than 150 varieties of tulips. If you arrive at Hillegom station it is a short 20-minute walk filled with scenic views as you stroll away.
You’ll want to check out their inviting greenhouse where you can have a bite to eat and accompany it with a cup of coffee or a refreshing drink. If you have kids, they offer a children’s playground and, on the weekends, they’ll organise special events for them.

4. Noordwijkerhout
Another charming town in the bulb-growing region only a quick 15-minute car ride from Leiden is Noordwijkerhout, offering beautiful walking paths and cycling routes through flower fields. You can also take a pit stop through Langevelderslag Beach for a picnic to add to your itinerary.
The annual Flower Parade (Bloemencorso) takes place in April, where elaborately decorated floats adorned with flowers parade through the streets. If you happen to miss it, you can get a recap with pictures on their website.

There are many great options for cycling routes that will take you through scenic pathways on the route to the flower fields, or if you’re visiting a park, they usually give the option to rent bikes for a low price.
